The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is aware that Dart Energy Ltd has commenced the work required to plug four boreholes at their site at Broadmeadows.
This decision to plug the boreholes has been taken by the operator as an alternative to remedial action. A decision has been necessary because the boreholes constructed by the previous site operator did not conform to the required standard.
The licence for the site was originally issued to Greenpark Energy Ltd, but was acquired by Dart Energy (Europe) Ltd in 2012 following their acquisition of GP Energy Limited. The requirement to remediate the boreholes was also transferred, and SEPA and other regulatory bodies have been working with the company to agree the standards required to ensure that they are plugged and abandoned appropriately.
The company has advised SEPA that they plan to surrender the remaining part of the licence once this work is completed.
