Flooding outlook - 5 December

date05 December 2015

Marc Becker, SEPA’s Hydrology Duty Manager, said:

"Last night we saw heavy rainfall affect many central, southern and western parts of Scotland. Unfortunately the heavy and persistent rain will continue to affect much of Scotland during Saturday.

Across Scotland we have seen rivers have risen significantly overnight and they will continue to rise and remain very high throughout Saturday. We have already seen significant transport disruption, including arterial road and rail links and property flooding across wide areas of central and southern Scotland today. We are particularly concerned that the flooding situation will deteriorate further later today in the South West of Scotland and Tayside.

In areas of the western Scottish Borders, particularly around Hawick, we may see significant flooding impacts affecting a large number of properties, roads and infrastructure during Saturday evening. Similar impacts may also occur within the Tay catchment in Perthshire.

We will continue to monitor the situation and post the latest flood updates on our website. We’re also encouraging people to sign up to receive free flood messages direct to their phone via our website or by calling Flood line on 0345 988 1188. We will also be issuing social media messages on the specific areas of concern.

"Members of the public can also use the recently launched Report–a-Flood. People can report incidents of flooding, whether from sea, rivers or in towns using the tool and SEPA will publish these reports online to increase awareness of local flood impacts and help keep communities moving. This is purely for information sharing and cannot be used to report problems, ask questions or report emergencies. Emergency situations should always be reported to the emergency services"
