Reports of a burning type odour in the Leith area

date10 June 2016

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Edinburgh City Council have been receiving complaints from members of the public reporting a burning type odour in the Leith area.

We understand this is causing concern in the local community and we are working with the operators of Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works in order to resolve this issue.

Following a complaint from a member of the public SEPA attended the site on 6 June and verified that the odour was arising from the sewage sludge treatment processes at the site.  Odours from sludge treatment are regulated by SEPA.

We can assure the public that we are taking this matter very seriously. We have attended the site on several occasions to investigate and have discussed the urgent monitoring and assessments being undertaken within the site to track the exact sources of this odour. Once the exact source is identified steps will be taken by SEPA to make sure the operators undertake works to eliminate this problem.

We are in contact with our relevant partner organisations including Edinburgh City Council regarding this issue. We would advise members of the public to contact SEPA’s Pollution Hotline on 0800 807060 when they are affected by these odours as this will enable us to attend the area when these are most significant.
