SEPA response to planned flaring at Mossmorran – 3 July

date03 July 2019

SEPA received notification from ExxonMobil Chemicals Ltd on Sunday 30 June 2019 of their intention to undertake controlled flaring at the Mossmorran Fife Ethylene Plant from Monday 1 July 2019, for a period of no more than five days. Further to this announcement, the operator delayed the commencement of the planned works, which is due to start shortly.

In response to this notification and community concerns, SEPA has deployed monitoring equipment to capture air quality data once flaring begins and will be operational from the start of the flaring period at sites in Auchtertool, which are aligned with the forecast wind direction for the week so that local impacts are assessed.

SEPA officers will also attend the local area to assess impacts and noise monitoring will be undertaken to gather an initial assessment of the flaring.

SEPA will provide an update on the initial findings of the air quality monitoring once data has been collated and analysed.

All updates will be published on the online Mossmorran hub sepa.org.uk.uk/mossmorran. Reports of pollution can be made via our online reporting tool, available 24/7 at sepa.org.uk/report.
