Statement re Stornoway Flood Alert

  03 January 2014

Following an enquiry about the flood alert in Stornoway, our statement is below:

Forecasting coastal surges and their coincidence with high tides is not an exact science. While we can be fairly sure what the astronomical high tide still-water levels will be, the combination of wind-driven wave overtopping and storm surges with high tides makes the situation much less clear.

Whilst we generally predicted areas at risk across Scotland's West coast, we unfortunately did not judge that impacts in the Western Isles would be sufficient to issue a Flood Alert for this area.

Conditions were worse in Stornoway than had been predicted overnight, but once we were given information by partner organisations in the area we issued a Flood Alert for the evening high tide.
