The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) welcomes the Scottish Government’s formal confirmation that Bob Downes has been appointed as SEPA’s new Chair. His four year appointment began on 1 January 2016, following the retirement of Chairman David Sigsworth on 31 December 2015 after two terms in office.
Bob Downes has been a SEPA Board member since 1 January 2008. He has served as SEPA Deputy Chair since 1 January 2012, and chaired the Agency Board’s Audit Committee from 2010 to 2015.
SEPA Chief Executive, Terry A'Hearn, said,
I am delighted to welcome Bob as SEPA Chair. He brings a wealth of experience not only of SEPA, but also across the private, public and voluntary sectors, as well as an acute understanding of the vital role the environment plays in delivering economic and social benefits for the people of Scotland. Bob provides welcome continuity at the top of the organisation, and I'm sure he will be an influential leader of the Agency. I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with him on the implementation of SEPA's ambitious plans for the future
“The past few weeks have been a testing time for SEPA, as they have been for householders, businesses and farmers across Scotland, in dealing with the impacts of storms and floods. I have been in regular contact with our new Chair over the period, and would like particularly to express my thanks to SEPA staff for their diligence in ensuring accurate and timely flood forecasting and warning to help people take action to reduce the impacts of flood events.”
New SEPA Chair, Bob Downes, said,
I am very pleased to have been appointed as SEPA’s new Chair. I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor, David Sigsworth, for his excellent leadership, and having been a member of the Agency Board for eight years I am keen to continue to work alongside the Executive team to deliver on the vision the Board has set out for the Agency to firmly establish SEPA as a world class environment protection agency.”
The Scottish Government also appointed Martin Hill as a new SEPA Board Member. Terry A’Hearn said,
I’d also like to welcome Martin Hill to the SEPA Board. He will bring valuable experience and expertise from a health perspective in particular, and I look forward to working with him.”
