Avondale landfill site and Olympic waste

  28 July 2011

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is aware of some recent public interest regarding the Avondale landfill site at Polmont and allegations regarding the disposal of hazardous waste from the London Olympic site at the Avondale facility.

Avondale Environmental Limited have been operating a waste landfill site, Avondale Landfill, at Polmont for some time. This site is monitored by SEPA and is licensed to receive certain hazardous wastes, including asbestos.

We are aware that allegations have been made against Avondale, driven by one activist in particular, in relation to the disposal of hazardous waste from the London Olympic site. Discussions did take place in 2007 regarding a proposal to dispose of hazardous waste from the Olympic site at Avondale and SEPA advised the landfill operator at that time that they were not licensed to accept this material. The site operators have assured SEPA that no waste from the Olympic site has been disposed of at Avondale.

The Environment Agency (EA) is the regulating authority for the London Olympic Site. The EA has confirmed that none of the waste came to Scotland and that it was disposed of at sites in England.
